You feel no one's listening to you Now she doesn't pay attention You don't give yourself a break Everyone wants something from you I know she never listens You don't give yourself a break |
But to me So when you think that no one's listening And I'll try to pay attention Come on over take a break |
MOTIVATION
I had the idea for the bridge for some time, just never managed to get it into a song. While we were driving back from a concert I was in the back seat with my girlfriend who was, once again, completely done with her mom and her constant bitching about whatever came up in the conversation. The concert had been pretty dire but whatever argument my girlfriend would put on the table her mom just ignored, and in fact completely ignored anything her own daughter would say. No one was actually listening to what her mom said but because her mom has the habbit of just talking louder and louder until someone finally responds my girlfriend gave up. Later during the drive back home she started bitching about what my girlfriend did wrong at school, and my girlfriend just said "I can never do it right. I can never do it right" trying to zone out, which was pretty much impossible due to the constant yapping of her mom. We'd talked earlier how it'd be ok to do a step back even though her mom would disagree, she did enough already. But taking a step back meant failing in her eyes, even though I considered her perfect for what she was like anyway. It didn't really click for her how I thought she was perfect when all she'd hear from her mom were the things she did wrong, and then her dad backing up her mom as opposed to just ignoring it and telling her what she did right. |
EXPLANATION
"And a long beach on the walk" refers to me getting woken up by my girlfriend. She being American and me being Dutch I'd always resort to talking Dutch for the first sentences until she made clear to me she had no clue what I was talking about. I talked about taking a long beach on the walk, and obviously meant a long walk on the beach. We had a laugh over it, but I remembered it and decided to put it in a song as she'd mentioned before how she looked forward to taking a long walk on the beach. Once we were home I let her read the lyrics when we were in her bedroom, not having said a word about her frustration to her mom. She didn't listen anyway. She picked up on the error in regards to the long beach on the walk, and liked the lyrics.
