HIGHSCHOOL POLITICS

You claim that you're a democrat
Claim everybody should be free
Free under all the rules you've got
No one's allowed to disagree

I've seen people run communities
Just like you have before
You think you enjoy immunity
When you will start a war

You censor hospitality
So no one knows what's there
And the irrationality
Has gotten everybody scared

You think you're patriotic
Terrorizing those who talk
taking every right they've got
Because they don't follow your laws

But I won't be like you
Won't be treating all your people like you do

Your communistic ideologies
made the frail and fragile doubt
You lost control of regularities
Once I gave someone a way out

'cause once I found a way to look
Behind the kindness in your face
You tried to gather all your troops
And tried to put me in my place

But you're running high school politics
They're getting to your head
You are you ruling like a lunatic
With guns too worse for wear

You think that you're on top of things
But don't know what the people say
Before you take another swing
know I've got no one left to save

But I won't be like you
Won't be treating all your people like you do
I've got my pride and honesty that I pursue
It's what separating your lies from my truth

The fiercest enemy that you can have
's a man with nothing left to lose
You're a stranger here on no man's land
Where I'm a real threat to you

Behind your power lies corruption
there's real lack of trust
It's slowly turning your illusion
to a steaming pile of dust

You think you're independent
And they let you think you're smart
But know if no one holds your hand that
You are so hopelessly lost

You take pride in the relationships
You've build up overseas
Without your goods they'd not exist
You're nothing but a business deal

But I won't be like you
Won't be treating all your people like you do
I've got my pride and honesty that I pursue
It's what separating your lies from my truth

MOTIVATION

Quite the political song against some African dictator unless you know the story behind the lyrics. Although I had little anger towards my ex-fiancée in regards to the breakup, her mother, being the root of evil, had been a constant source of frustration and later anger, to me. A lot of the lyrics are quotes from her family.

If there's one thing this woman isn't it's a democrat. Her entire family is run like some weird dictatorship where everyone has to do what she wants or they'll get an insane amount of shit from her. She reminded me of the ex-wife of my boss, who dealt the same way with people and which wasn't exactly a friendly and healthy relationship. The problem was that no one had seen what she could be like, because friends get a completely different treatment. She'll terrorize you once you let the word out what she's like, all in the name of protecting her family, but it's only her own ass she's after.

I realize that my vocals aren't the strongest mostly because I've never sung like this before but I think it's quite clear on what it's supposed to sound like. I focussed a lot more on the guitarwork in this one, first writing a lick for the chorus and then composing quite a lenghty aggressive guitarsolo which would be very Slash-like.

Originally the song started as a slow blues song but at a certain point I had way too many lyrics which would make the song about 14 minutes long, which is a bit much. I'd been jamming with my Epiphone Les Paul a few nights before I started recording this and had written the chords but had no lyrics for the melody I had written out earlier. I rewrote the lyrics to this melody and finally things got together.

EXPLANATION

"You're running highschool politics, they're getting to your head" refers to direct quote from her daughter and later, when my fiancee discussed the fight she got involved in, her husband confirming as well how it's nothing but highschool politics her mother runs, another thing he obviously flat out denies ever having said or thought when being confronted by his wife.

"You're nothing but a business deal"
refers to her husband saying that his wife not really realized how she didn't have as many friends as she'd like to believe as they were mostly based upon the recordings they made of concerts they visited. Would she not have those recordings no one would bother with her.

"The fiercest enemy that you can have is a man with nothing left to lose" refers to a line cigarette smoking man says in the X-files, and I liked it and it refers quite nicely to the current situation. The X-Files has nothing to do with it but the quote stuck with me. Once I'd lost my fiancée I had nothing left to lose as it'd been her daughters wish for me not to speak up anymore and not to let out any dirt to make her own mother shut up. Now there's nothing to stop me from airing dirty laundry I reckon it's my turn to talk.

"Once I gave someone a way out"
refers to me giving her daughter a way out, and her daughter a chance to grow into very independant woman, a lot more than she actually wished she'd be because the independancy and confidence her daughter had was something she could only dream of. She was good at pretending she was very good by herself but needs her husband a lot more than she'd like to admit.
