MARRY YOU

Got down on one knee
be begging you please
and I might be asking you on Christmas eve

Love you all my life
til the day that I die
If something is wrong with you I'll make it right

I don't understand
is it part of the plan?
Cause I want to give to you all that I can

Never be lonely
cause you'll be the only
one I want to keep in my life so know

I want to marry you
I never understood
why people wanted to
But now I do, I do

So once that I'm gone
your days will be long
But I will come back for you, you just hold on

They just don't know
that once we've grown old
we'll be the ones saying we told you so

I want to marry you
I never understood
why people wanted to
But now I do, I do

You light up my room
every time that you do
I have been wondering if you feel it too

I hear wedding bells
Got you for myself
Cause I just want you, yeah you no one else

I want to marry you
I never understood
why people wanted to
But now I do, I do

I do

MOTIVATION

I was never one who felt like marrying someone. I'd talked about it with previous girlfriends but was never convinced it'd be a good idea. Suddenly after I'd met my then-girlfriend in the summer of 2010 I had the line "I want to marry you" in my head for a few weeks. I wasn't able to do anything with it due to being too tired from work once I got home, but it kept showing up and eventually I managed to get a full chorus.

On a friday or saturday evening once work was done I'd been strumming some chords and just put words to them that I thought fit. I remembered the chorus, tried to put it to music and it worked. The next day I think I wrote down several of the lines while actually talking to my girlfriend on Skype, she being completely unaware of what I was doing at the same time I was talking to her.

When work got really busy I never managed to finish the song even though I'd fully intended to propose to her on Christmas eve, especially with now having lyrics describing this as well. I remember arriving at the airport to fly back to her place thinking I might be able to write stuff on the plane. Due to heavy snow I got an 8 hour delay, yet no place to sit down and write. Once finally on the plane, having slept a bit I finished another few lines.

I remember seeing her again 3 days before Christmas or so, still not having finished the song. On a morning I got up out of bed early, a thing she wasn't too fond of, and finished the words for this. On Christmas eve once her parents had gone to bed she and her brother sat in the TV room and I joked around saying I'd written a new one. I played her this song, still having the lyrics in front of me and stopped before the guitar solo, getting on one knee and proposing to her, and she said yes.

I'd always intended to record this song, even before Christmas. Now that I've been recording everything I've written for her I got to this one as well. I have no idea where I left the original handwritten lyrics I wrote on the plane and couldn't remember several lines though I think I got close with what's written down below. I'm quite happy with how it turned out. I know the lyrics are very cheesy but 'ey, that's how you feel when you're totally in love, right?

EXPLANATION

"You light up my room" refers to "Light Up My Room". a song by Barenaked Ladies. It was the first song of which she admitted to thinking of me whenever she heard the song. I couldn't make much sense of the lyrics of the song but they got a point across anyway. I'd played the song for her several times, and every time I did she teared up (aww...). The line was too perfect not to use again in a sonng of my own. When I actually sang the song before I proposed to her she picked up on the line, and didn't expect it to be in there. It's funny how such a small sentence can mean so much to two different people.
